Comments from Great North Bike Ride 2006  Participants:

"Many thanks for a great day last Sunday. It's the first time I have done the ride (along with, though not alongside my wife - she shouted at me for disappearing into the distance too often) and we both thoroughly enjoyed it - along with 1000 others it seems! We are already planning for next years event and hope to have more family and friends with us for it. Congratulations and well done to all concerned".

"Can I just say I thought the event was magnificent and what a wonderful way to remember your son whilst raising money for a truly worthy cause.  I have only good memories of the day and the atmosphere at the end was very inspiring particularly being clapped across the finishing line and meeting people who I had passed, and who had passed me along the way. Looking forward to next year’s event."

"Congratulations – an excellent and well organised event which I thoroughly enjoyed.  Sign me up for next year and I’ll make sure I’m better prepared and raise more money!"

"just wanted to say that Sunday 27th August was a fantastic day. The organisation, the help, the backup, the marshals etc etc etc, was just fantastic; I was going to make 2006 my last bike ride... now I am not so sure. Well done and a big thank you to everyone who made this event a safe and fantastic event. I look forward to seeing the photos"

"Just a quick note of thanks. I had a puncture after 10 miles yesterday and my spare was also punctured. The Marshalls were soon on the scene and fixed the problem for me. Please pass on my appreciation to them"

"I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate everyone involved with the organisation of the event for their efforts as both           and I thought the organisation was relaxed but extremely professional so hats off to everyone. You will definitely see us again next year for the bike ride and hopefully I won't get a puncture outside the 'Park Hotel', mind you I did get my photo in the Chronicle which was a bonus. Good luck with the fund-raising and you will always have our support whenever possible".

GNBR background
It all began October 2000, following the death of our dear son Chris, John Lee, the father of Gavin, one of Chris's best friends wanted to help us fundraise. John initially wanted to cycle from Edinburgh to Tynemouth Priory in one Day!

John was fit but he had not cycled around the block for some years!

John said  we could all have a drink at Tynemouth to celebrate that same evening!

I was really worried about him so I said how about  Seahouses? It  was a lot nearer since  Edinburgh is not all  down hill !

And to cycle such a  distance in a day was far too much. So to cut a long story short Chris' best friends in alphabetical order - David Moncrieff, Gary Ross, Gavin Lee, Stewart Lamb, , and one of our dear friends Brian Giles, now our Chairman of the Trust, and of course John Lee, cycled from Seahouse to Tynemouth Priory October 2000, they raised £2,000 from sponsorship, for the Chris Lucas Trust. So only 6 cyclist's started the GREAT NORTH BIKE RIDE.

Year 2001, 58 cyclists took part, 2002, 300 cyclists took part, 2003, 600, 2004, 700, 2005, 921, took part, and it's rising each year!, Everyone said they enjoyed cycling as near as you can possibly get to the coastline, apart form cycling along the beach of course!

So I decided since a lot of cyclists said to me they enjoyed the 'bike ride' and  a lot said it was  'great', and  I agree it's  such a beautiful part of the 'North'-East, I thought THE GREAT NORTH BIKE RIDE was the most  appropriate name, I hope you think the same when you do the bike ride, we are sure you will agree!

Maybe your wondering why Tynemouth was the finish!  Chris was attracted to the Tynemouth Priory, it's such a lovely area of coastline, he used to go to the Priory and sit by himself, or with his friends Dave, Gary, Gavin, Stu, during the good times, and sadly, he would take off  for hours by himself, during the bad times in his short  life.
